01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Step off Shinobazu-dori into Cafe Saotome, and the calm atmosphere flows gently from the daylight-filled front window seats to the quiet tables further inside. Framed by aged timber textures and Western ceramic ware that feel woven into the neighborhood's history, the classic dining room makes a comfortable refuge for opening a book solo or lingering through a quiet afternoon.
Those arriving hungry will immediately notice the classic Napolitan. Slender spaghetti noodles are thoroughly coated in a rich tomato sauce, layered with the natural sweetness of coarsely cut onions, sausage, and green peppers for an old-fashioned, comforting profile. Paired with a side salad, it delivers a distinctly nostalgic kind of satisfaction.
The food menu also features homemade chicken curry, handmade shrimp pilaf, and beef Stroganoff prepared in the style of Russian-influenced hayashi rice. Among these, the Russian-style borscht stew served with toast is especially fitting for lunch when you want a piping-hot bowl to warm up.
Careful attention also goes into every beverage. The house blend, Saotome, stands out for its lively acidity, while options like the lightly bitter Goban blend and the gentler Soft American roast let you match the coffee to your mood. On warmer days or whenever an iced drink appeals, choices include concentrated cold-drip Dutch coffee and au lait glacé, known for its visual contrast of layered milk and coffee.
Tea drinkers are well served by ordering Earl Grey or Assam by the pot. Served with the leaves steeping inside alongside a separate pot of hot water for topping up, it lets you savor the changing aromas unhurriedly over time.
Morning hours bring sets built around toast, from choices spread with jam or peanut butter to aromatic cinnamon sugar toast. During weekday tea breaks, pairing a drink with the weekday-only mocha roll cake set is an enjoyable way to unwind. Keep in mind that payment is cash only, so having bills or coins on hand is advisable before you stop by.
